On March 23, 2013 the Forensic Science Student Organization will hold the 11th Annual Forensic Science Symposium. The event, themed “Off the Beaten Path,” will showcase forensic scientists who work in the disciplines not as well publicized as DNA and fingerprints. Each will give a 45-minute presentation on their field of interest. Some of the speakers include:

  • Pete Diaczuk,  past NEAFS president and firearms expert
    Peter Diaczuk is a leading authority in forensics and an expert witness on firearms, trace evidence, and crime scene reconstruction. He has performed research on topics as diverse as underwater fingerprints, blood spatter patterns from gunshot wounds, and bullets ricocheting from different surfaces.
  • Ke Chung Kim, Ph.D., forensic entomologist
    Professor emeritus and curator of Frost Entomological Museum
    Director, Center for BioDiversity Research
    Penn State University
  • Samuel Land, M.D., forensic pathologist
    21 years of experience in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology and forensic pathology

The Forensic Science Training Institute at Cedar Crest College is designed to offer continuing education to both investigative and scientific professionals in the forensic sciences. Along with the FEPAC accredited undergraduate Forensic Science program, Cedar Crest College hopes to make a positive contribution in the training and education of current and future professionals.

Forensic Science Leadership Lecture

Joseph P. Bono, past-president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), will deliver the Cedar Crest College Forensic Science Leadership Lecture on Thursday, Oct. 11, 5:30 p.m. in Samuels Theatre. This program is free and open to the public.

Bono most recently spent four years as an instructor in the Forensic and Investigative Science program at Indiana University/Purdue University before retiring in 2011. He has been a member of the AAFS since1978, and achieved the status of Fellow in 1980 in the Criminalistics Section. He served the organization in many capacities, including as president in 2010-11, and he was awarded the AAFS Criminalistics Section Mary Cowan Distinguished Service Award in 2006. He is also a Trustee of the Forensic Sciences Foundation.
